Bermuda Bacchanal
A four-masted flagpole plaza graces the circular entrance drive of the
stately coral-colored hotel building. On a mild but blustery afternoon
in late March, the hotel staff members began their flag-raising ritual.
But this was an unusual day for them because the first flag hoisted,
with its white background and orange print, depicted not a national
emblem but four enthusiastic tigers embracing their beer mugs and
harmoniz-ing a tune. Soon the proud message was flapping in the breeze
for all to see... "Princeton Nassoon Alumni."
The Nassoon flag-soon joined by the Stars and Stripes, the Union Jack,
and the Bermudian national flag-waived proudly for the next four
glorious days as Nassoons from the classes of 1954 to 1971 gathered at
the Pink Beach Club in Tucker Town, Bermuda, for a memorable weekend of
re-newed friendships and song. Joining the gathering were Jerry and
Betsy Ford '54, Dave Howell '55 and Carolyn Davis, Hugh and Peggy
Madden '57, Gary Lane '57, Lew Ross '58 and Miles Dumont, Erich and
Patsy Everbach '58, J. D. and Judy Helms 59, Bob and Beth Taylor, '59,
Dunc and Joan Dempster '59, Rich and Vicky McGlynn '60, Dick and Carol
Grieves '60, Don and Judy Lewin '61, Blair Klein '61, Buzz and Sue
Kelsey '62, Dave and Carol Watts '62, Chuck Sethness '63, John and Mart
Pieper '65, Mac and Clare McMorris '66, Roger Bates '67 and Mary
Bradshaw, Jim and Jane Schenkel '68, Chuck Goldberg '71, and Lucy Kirk
(Wellesley '62, a guest of the McGlynns).
The "Bermuda Bacchanal" was superbly organized by Rich and Vicky
McGlynn who, together with Lew Ross, served as the group's hosts for
the weekend. Vicky, in real life a travel agent back home in New
Jersey, was able to arrange abso-lutely wonderful accommodations for
the group-spacious cottages situated on a bluff immediately fronting
the beach and ocean. Beachcombing was a must, and those who braved the
chilly, but beautiful aqua-colored ocean were treated to the
up-close-and-personal frolicking of schools of parrot fish. The
hospitality of the staff of the Pink Beach Club was second only to the
marvelous food the group enjoyed during their stay, with breakfast,
dinner, and afternoon tea all part of the MAP bargain Vicky put
together.
The reunion brought back fond memories to many of the Nassoons in
attendance-particularly to Messrs Ford, Howell and Madden who had sung
there some 50 years (I) before as un-dergraduates. They brought along
pictures from those days gone by to share with all. The long distance
award went, once again, to Dunc and Joan Dempster who traveled all the
way from another island in the middle of an ocean...Oahu! Erich and
Patsy Everbach received kudos for lugging the Nassoon flag all the way
from their home in Southern California. Mac McMorris also did some
schlepping of his own...bringing with him an ample supply of brand new
CDs of the 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1963 albums that he enthusiastically
peddled to the group (on behalf of the Alumni Association), all to
avoid having to schlep them back home again! And Buzz Kelsey walked
away with the "fashion statement" award for his oh-so-subtle orange and
black striped, knee-high socks and accompanying black bermuda shorts.
The event started on Thursday evening, March 31 st, as the group
gathered for dinner at the Pink Beach Club, fol-lowed by some casual
singing in the adjacent Atlantic Lounge immediately afterwards, and
thereafter by stories and reminiscences in the hotel's cozy bar until
the wee hours. A rigorous rehearsal on Friday morning set them up for
their first performance-at a cocktail reception at the Pink Beach Club
that evening. After another re-hearsal Saturday morning, the group was
more than primed for an evening concert at the Coral Beach and Tennis
Club where they sang for club members and in-vited guests-an event
hosted by Lew Ross, a long-time club member. Under the direction of
Rich McGlynn, the singing only improved during the weekend as the group
prepped for what is sure to be an impressive performance at the 65th
Reunion next year in Princeton.

During the course of the weekend, the singing was inter-rupted by
afternoon excursions to the nearby towns of Hamilton and St. George for
shopping and sightseeing and by some challenging golf at the renowned
Mid-Ocean Golf Club just down the road. And while Sunday brought rainy,
blustery weather, the group refused to let their spir-its dampen as
they enjoyed sightseeing and libations dur-ing a four-hour afternoon
boat cruise around the island. Sunday evening brought more informal
singing in the lounge, followed by dinner and yet more singing-
including a brief but wonderful a cappella performance by three of the
ladies (Vicky, Lucy and Mary) and was finally capped off with some
hilarious story telling by Rich McGlynn in the bar.
Another marvelous Nassoon mini-reunion is in the books! The group is
looking forward to reconvening next spring
